Take your love of animals to the next level through volunteering.

Being a volunteer for the Humane Society of Genesee County is one of the most important jobs you can have.

HSGC Volunteers are an invaluable part of our operation. We encourage parents/guardians with their child (ages 10 and up), and people that simply enjoy working with animals to apply.  There are many opportunities available, such as dog walking, cat cuddling, working on events and so much more.

We do have some restrictions in dog walking. New volunteers begin by walking specific (lower energy) dogs, and as their knowledge & experience grows, their opportunities expand. For volunteers interested in walking dogs, they will be assessed after 25 hours of actual hands-on dog walking to move on to the “Stage 2” level. The Stage 2 walkers are encouraged to work with even more animals and an expanded area to walk.  We do not take out puppies & kittens under the age of 6 months.

Unaccompanied volunteers must be 16 years or older to volunteer at the Humane Society of Genesee County. Volunteers ages 10-15 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

We ask for a 6 month volunteer commitment with at least 5 hours a month. If you are not able to commit to this, please do not apply.

To volunteer, send us the following by mail or drop off:

  • A copy of your tetanus vaccine
  • A copy of your driver’s license or personal ID
  • A copy of your medical insurance card
  • A completed application (submitted 7 days prior to orientation date).  Please fill out our printable form here or stop in and pick one up.

You must include all of the information together when submitting your application.  It can not be processed unless it includes the required information.

  • $25 ($10 additional for any child attending) fee for cost of training, t-shirt and maintenance fees (payable by check, cash, credit or debit at the orientation).

Failure to turn in all required documents at the same time will automatically dismiss you from being a volunteer.

After applications are reviewed, you will receive an email of confirmation with the final details of attending orientation.

For safety and liability purposes, we reserve the right to deny volunteer applications submitted to HSGC.  The orientations are held on a Saturday morning or a Wednesday afternoon, and your time will be confirmed upon receiving your confirmation letter.
